MITERED CORNERS
With the increased specification of horizontally applied metal siding, mitered corners
are likewise being increasingly specified. The corners are installed whenever horizontal
continuity must be maintained. These formed pieces are constructed from .050 aluminum,
eliminating corrosion. Coats of primer and finish paint are shop-applied to ensure color matching
to the adjacent panels.
Suggested Specification
Building corners shall be accomplished using shop mitered and welded corner panels to maintain continuity of panel profile(s) around the corners. Field cut miters, bent and pop-riveted miters, or applied trim are not acceptable.
Miters shall be formed from 0.050" aluminum roll formed (*1) to exactly match the profile of the horizontal wall panels. Steel substrates are not acceptable for materials to be welded. The miters shall be full width of the profile and shall be 12" x 12" (*2) long. The aluminum profile shall be miter cut and shop welded. After welding the miters shall be ground smooth to provide a sharp corner. The finished miters shall be shop painted with a baked-on spray formulation PVDF finish (*3) to match the prefinished metal panels in color, gloss, and performance.
Miters shall be applied by lapping the wall panels.
Window Jambs, etc.
Window jambs shall be accomplished using shop welded closed end panels to maintain continuity of panel profile (s) past the openings. Field closed ends or applied trim are not acceptable.
Closed ends shall be formed from 0.050" aluminum roll formed to exactly match the profile of the horizontal wall panels. Steel substrates are not acceptable for materials to be welded. The closed ends shall be full width of the profile and shall be nominal 12" long. Aluminum profile closures shall be shop welded to the aluminum profile. After welding the closed ends shall be ground smooth. The finished closed ends shall be shop painted with a baked-on spray formulation PVDF finish to match the prefinished metal panels in color, gloss and performance.
Closed ends shall be applied by lapping the wall panels.
NOTES:
- Using a roll-formed panel for the miters/closed ends assures that the profiles will nest exactly. This is important to insure a smooth sight line around the corner.
- Standard miters are typically 12" x 12", but you can vary the dimensions to suit the project.
- A PVDF spray formulation, when applied to aluminum and baked-on, provides the same performance as the roll-coated finish on the panels. Any air-dry paint, aka touch-up, will fade at a much higher rate and you will see color difference in a matter of months.
- Due to differences in finish application methods, exact color matches may not be available in certain metallic finishes and colors.
